A GLOOMY Jason De Vos was this morning awaiting results on a second scan to see if he will play against Cardiff City tomorrow, writes Derek Davis.

The Canadian international, who was discovered to have a hairline fracture at the top of a fibula, revealed that an older crack also showed up on the scan, which he previously knew nothing about. De Vos is keen to play, and Blues boss Joe Royle would also like him to start against the Bluebirds, but will take medical advice today before a decision is made.

The defender said last night: "It is within the realms of possibility that I will play. I came to Ipswich to play football, not sit in the stands, and if there is no risk of causing further damage then I will play.

"I have my own high standards and will not play if I feel I can not do a good job for Ipswich. Mentally I feel fine and want to play. The leg feels okay, certainly no worse than it was last week when I played."

Another crack on the non weight-bearing bone also showed up on the scan taken in Canada and De Vos uses that as an example of how it is possible to play.

He said: "I had no idea that I had a previous stress fracture to the leg before. It showed up as an irregularity on the scan but I guess that it is all just part of the bruising and battering you get in football."

The new injury is believed to have happened in the latter stages of Town's friendly win over Osasuna at the beginning of the month. He has since played against Gillingham, Nottingham Forest and Derby County, ignoring the pain.

De Vos' mood was not helped by Canada's 2-0 defeat in their World Cup qualifier against Guatemala in Vancouver without him.

Once he knew he wasn't playing De Vos jumped on the first available plane home and arrived back in Ipswich yesterday afternoon. He said: "I'm not in the most cheerful of moods, as you can imagine. The loss was devastating really and even though there are five more games to go that one defeat could spell the end of our chances of getting through."

Jamie Peters, who has been offered a deal with Ipswich Town, was a 70th-minute substitute as he made his full international debut at just 17 years old.

Peters will join Manchester United for a few day's trial next week before deciding which club to join, with Derby and Millwall also keen on signing him.
