Bury were looking to avenge there FA Cup defeat of three weeks ago at the hands of the Dockers, but they did more than that, they demolished the Essex side and frankly the score should have been double figures as the home side produced a stunning performance in this Bostik League North Division clash in front of 260 very happy spectators, writes JOHN CAMPANY.
It was an irresistible start in the opening 21 minutes that saw Bury score twice miss a penalty and totally dominate proceedings with power and precision.
Both Darren Mills and Ollie Hughes overpowered the fragile visiting defence that had no answer to the constant wave of attacks.
They should have been ahead on seven minutes but Leon Ottley-Gooch blasted a spot kick over after Mills was tripped.
However, they opened the scoring on 19 minutes when Joe White’s cross was struck with force by Mills beyond Clarke Bogard.
Two minutes later Darcy D’eath’s excellent long throw into the box caused havoc that culminated in Ottley-Gooch atoning for his penalty miss by heading home after the ‘keeper had partially saved.
In a rare attack Adam Vyse sent a rasping shot that Luis Tibbles finger-tipped on to the bar but that apart, it was a rampant Bury that maintained the pressure and made it three on 27 minutes when Hughes powerfully headed home Bradley Barber’s corner.
Tilbury, seeking a lifeline, clawed a goal back in the 41st minute when substitute Tobias Aromolaran’s shot was deflected by D’eath into the net but Ben Chenery’s side put matters into perspective just on half-time when Cemal Ramadan glided past defenders to send a sensational shot from 25 yards high into the net to make it 4-1.
This was followed by Bogard producing a great double save denying Mills and Hughes.
The carnage continued on 48 minutes.
Mills crossed from the right resulting in Ramadan driving past Bogard.
The hapless keeper then saw red when he stamped on Mills lying prostrate on the ground but this time it was Ramadan who sent the spot kick wide.
Seeking atonement man-of-the-match Ramadan added another for his hat-trick following Hughes’s pass to put the seal on a thoroughly professional performance that sees Bury move into seventh position in the table.
Meanwhile, a jubilant Bury boss Ben Chenery was delighted with his side’s performance.
“We were relentless in the opening 15 minutes,” he said.
“When we were beaten by them in the FA Cup the other week, they overly celebrated, but they should have been aware of the wounded animal!
“I wanted my side to put the record straight and this we did resulting in us blowing them away. This has been the best performance since I became manager.
“We played with high intensity and were ruthless but should have had double figures.
“In training we have emphasised the importance of our strikers Ollie (Hughes) and Darren (Mills) working the channels and this certainly caused Tilbury problems. Indeed they were unplayable.
“We have previously allowed opponents to settle, but not this afternoon. This should be seen as a stepping stone and hopefully we can produce a similar display at Norwich United on Tuesday night.”
