Ipswich Wanderers chairman Keith Lloyd is dreaming of another FA Cup adventure, ahead of the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division side’s Extra Preliminary Round clash at Hullbridge Sports on Saturday.

Wanderers head to the Essex Senior League outfit with memories of their last cup run, which saw them reach the Second Qualifying Round, still fresh in the mind.

Back then, in 2015, Wanderers, then managed by Glen Read, were narrowly edged out by one of the most respected non-league clubs around, Enfield Town, 1-0 away at Donkey Lane.

“Our run two years ago proved the FA Cup is a great competition for the supporters and it gives the club something to shout about,” said Lloyd, who confirmed the club would receive £1,500 for progression in the competition.

Asked if the aim was for Wanderers to make it as far as a clash with one of Suffolk’s bigger non-league clubs, the chairman added: “It would be nice to perhaps draw a team further afield than that, as it gives supporters a chance to visit a ground at a higher level.

“We only lost 1-0 at Enfield two years ago, the team gave a good account of themselves, and the players love to move on in the Cup.

“Hopefully we can get another positive result against Hullbridge, although we have a number of injuries, a couple of suspensions and one player still on holiday.”

Wanderers head to Essex off the back of a 1-1 draw at home to Walsham-le-Willows in their opening game of the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division season in midweek.

Darius Laws grabbed a late equaliser for Shane Wardley’s team, in front of a new record crowd at Humber Doucy Lane, 170.

“We know we have picked up some supporters based on the people that were there on Tuesday,” Lloyd added.

“We can provide entertainment that perhaps some other bigger clubs can’t and we feel we provide a good spectacle which isn’t too expensive.”

On the season ahead, the Wanderers’ chief said: “I am very optimistic.

“Last season we were pushing for a place in the top-six or seven at one stage and eventually had an excellent finish in the top half which has given us something to build on.”
