Wymondham Wasps, the undefeated league leaders with a perfect seven wins from seven games, left Hatchley Barn with a Bee in their bonnet, despite a 36-12 win.
Coming to the end of the first half, the Amazons found themselves 26-0 down, courtesy of tries from Nik Kaciubskyj, Laura Blowers, Libby Lockwood and Canadian stand-off Kelsey Harpman.
The visitors had dealt with their Suffolk hosts very effectively, pressurising Woodbridge playmaker Claire Brickley at every opportunity, whilst doing the basics well themselves, rucking well and using inside passes to expose gaps in the Amazons defence.
After the break, the Amazons showed their fighting spirit and in the last 15 minutes had the leaders well and truly rattled.
It was a different side that tore at their illustrious opponents after the restart, as drive after drive at the Wasps line was repelled.
Lockwood returned a high ball with interest, only for Amazons centre Kirsty Brierley to run her down yards from scoring.
Just managing to get back in numbers, the Woodbridge defence held up a runner over the try line.
Then, another try-scoring opportunity ended with an attacker being thwarted as the Amazons threw all they had at their Norfolk visitors. Eventually however, the ball was worked wide for Lockwood to touch down for 31-0.
Lockwood then grabbed her hat-trick from halfway, following a quick turnover, making an already commanding score look totally unassailable.
Substitutes entered the fray on both sides, but it was the gutsy hosts that stood up in the closing quarter and Aby Kegg’s try was converted by Julie Thatcher.
The scoreline favoured the Wasps but the hosts were in the ascendancy and Carmelo Roisin powered her way over in the corner.
Roisin put in a great display, while winger Rhian Claydon provided resolute defending out wide.
The last play of the match saw Amazons’ Maggie Kelly simply run through an opponent at the death, sustaining an injury which was enough for the referee to blow the full-time whistle.
Despite the final result, once again this group of ladies showed tremendous courage, and a rebuilding season is fast developing into a great looking squad.
