It gets no easier for Leiston as they continue their FA Trophy odyssey today.

Fresh from a dramatic 5-3 penalty shoot-out win at Conference South side Eastbourne Borough on Tuesday night, the Blues now face a team two divisions above them, when they travel to National League outfit Bromley, today.

The Ravens are mid-table in the fifth tier of English football, 12 points clear of the drop-zone and an equal number of points away from the play-offs.

Having defeated Eastbourne and fellow Conference South side, Hungerford Town – the latter in the FA Cup – the Blues will be aiming for a treble of higher-league scalps today – albeit the standard will be raised a notch.

Blues manager Glenn Driver said: “It will be a proud moment to pit my wits against a club of Bromley’s stature.

“We were unlucky not to reach the FA Cup First Round and to get to the first round of the Trophy is a proud moment for me in my first season, as I think it’s only the second time the club has reached that stage.”

Driver was appointed as part of a new-look management team in the summer, being joined by Head Coach Tony Kinsella and the Leiston boss is relishing the task of taking on the non-league big-boys as he continues his managerial development.

“I am a young manager that is learning all the time,” he added.

“We are full of confidence and we will go to Bromley and play the right way by getting the ball down on the floor. That is the only way I know and some people have compared it to Kevin Keegan’s style of football.

“I will take that as a compliment because I loved watching Kevin Keegan’s teams play.”

Keegan’s teams tended to play open, expansive football, especially his Newcastle side of the mid-90s, and Driver believes his side will get the opportunity to that today.

“Teams like Eastbourne come out and play, although they changed their system to 4-4-2 after playing us at our place,” revealed Driver.

“In our league teams shut up shop before they kick-off and we have to find a way to break that down.

“When you pit your wits against teams at Conference level it gives you a feelgood factor knowing that if we were to go up, we would probably be able to hold our own and hopefully have a couple of good cup runs.”

Meanwhile, Driver’s signing of Harry Lay Fulcher, (18) the Woodbridge Town goalkeeper is a demonstration of the route the Blues want to take, according to Driver.

“We have just got to keep building the football club,” Driver said.

“We have just signed Harry Lay Fulcher from Woodbridge, so we are trying to do it the right way with kids coming through our system.

“I think it’s the only way you can go to be fair.”

Driver is likely to have Christy Finch back in his squad today after the striker missed the midweek victory in east Sussex, but skipper Tom Bullard (broken jaw) remains sidelined and new signings Joe Marsden and Niko Moore are cup-tied.
