Colchester United have made their fifth signing of the week, by securing the services of former Gillingham club captain, Doug Loft.
Midfielder Loft, aged 29, was a regular in Gillingham’s squad following his switch from Port Vale in 2014 – he had made 174 league appearances for the Valiants, from 2009.
The experienced Loft was released by the Gills last season, after an injury-troubled campaign, although he did play 28 games last term.
He arrives at the Community Stadium following hot on the heels of fellow new recruits Denny Johnstone, Dexter Peter, Courtney Senior and Brennan Dickenson.
Loft broke U’s hearts in March, 2015, by netting a dramatic injury-time equaliser to deny the U’s two points in a 2-2 draw at Priestfield.
