With just a few ‘quality’ signings, striker David McGoldrick believes Ipswich Town will be capable of another serious promotion push in 2016/17.

The Blues’ hopes of making the play-offs were over by the middle of April following a run of seven games without a win, but Mick McCarthy’s side ended the season with successive victories as they beat MK Dons, followed by Saturday’s 1-0 success away at Derby.

McCarthy has already said he would like to keep loanee Liam Feeney next season and has released Luke Varney, Jay Tabb and Larsen Toure, with McGoldrick sure the additions his manager makes this summer will help ensure Ipswich are in the thick of the promotion race once again.

“I’m sure the gaffer will go away and work on things,” the striker said.

“We’ve got a few people on loan who might not be here as well as some players out of contract who have been released already, so I’m sure the gaffer will go into the market and see what’s about.

“Whatever signings he makes he brings in good quality so hopefully we can bring in some quality for next season.

“Next season we know we want to be in the top six, that’s what we’re aiming for and if we have a good pre-season we can do that.”

McGoldrick scored the decisive goal on Saturday as he rolled home a penalty to secure victory at Derby.

While the win doesn’t mask the fact the Blues failed in their bid to reach the play-offs, McGoldrick is pleased with the way his side finished up the season.

“We had a dip at the wrong time and it was a real bad dip,” he said.

“At home we needed to win games and we didn’t do it but we’ve come on strong in the last three away games.

“We’ve played Sheffield Wednesday, Middlesbrough and Derby and drawn two and won one, that’s five points from three tough games and that’s a positive.”

McGoldrick was also pleased to be able to give the club’s fans something to cheer about heading into the summer.

“The fans deserve it too, they’re always with us and have brought over a thousand to this one,” he said.

“It was a game in which where there was nothing really to play for for us, and they’ve come in their numbers which we’re very thankful for.

“They made noise throughout and it’s great to have been able to send them off with a win.” “If our home form was better who knows.

“We’ve finished strong which is what we want to do.”
