Bury scored a dramatic 79th minute try to claim the points in South East London.

The result, desperately needed, was no more than Bury deserved for their efforts and after a season littered with narrow misses and heart ache, it was great to see fortune favouring them for once.

Nick Bingham opened the scoring, powering his way over from close range. Scott Lyle added the extras and it was 7–0 Bury after just four minutes.

OE’s levelled up the scores after 24 minutes. Quick hands released Dowsett and he was able to send the supporting Hough galloping in by the side of the posts. A conversion made it 7-7.

A trait that has haunted Bury all season has been dealing with the re start and once again they coughed up possession almost immediately.

Bresson took advantage, darting through a gap and racing towards the line. He was stopped just short but a stretched defence were powerless to stop him firing out a long missed pass to the lurking Aaron Liffchack home alone on the wing, to make it 12-7.

Bury reduced the arrears a couple of minutes before the break, Lyle’s fine kick into the strong cross wind making it 12-10.

White quickly extended the lead to 15-10 with a penalty from 35 metres after Bury had gone off their feet at a ruck.

However, parity was restored almost immediately as Chris Lord set off on a mazy run, avoiding three tacklers before deftly nudging the ball ahead for Sam Goatley to run on to and score in the corner. It was 15-15 after just five minutes of the second half.

Bury’s pressure on the hosts saw Bixby and Cook hound the OE’s half backs into conceding a penalty under their own sticks. It was a simple kick for Lyle and Bury led again, 18-15.

With Bury then forced to play on the counter, White levelled the scores with a kick and a minute later put OE’s in front when the west Suffolk side’s brave attempt to run the ball out saw Shaq Meyers rather harshly adjudged to not have released the ball.

Bury were suddenly trailing 21–18 with only eight minutes left on the clock.

But Bury were not to be denied. As the clock ticked down, another solid Bury line out – Collins throwing in had been superb – set a driving maul in motion which took Bury to half way.

A rare poor Affleck pass seemed to have halted the attack as Lyle had to stop and pirouette to catch and then pass on to Chris Lord.

But now a stretched defence had left him one on one with his opposite number.

He managed to hand off the would be tackler and then sprint 30 metres to swallow dive over for the victory!

Perhaps it was a little harsh on OE’s to lose but the determination and never say die spirit of the Bury players deserved them their win and with other rivals in the league also winning it may prove a vital four points.
