There may not have been any goals but there was still plenty to discuss following Ipswich Town’s 0-0 draw with Burnley. What got you talking?
No club record but the run goes on
Sadly (or not, depending on how you feel about the subject) Sir Bobby Robson’s record of six straight away wins from 1976 is safe for the time being. The Blues fell at the final hurdle but are still on a run of seven away games without a loss. That’s very impressive by any reckoning and a string of results which has propelled the Blues back into the promotion race.
This was one for the defenders
This was no thriller, far from it, but I’m sure the defenders enjoyed it. If the ball wasn’t in the air it was being fought for on the ground, with Tommy Smith and Christophe Berra more or less keeping Andre Gray and Sam Vokes quiet, while Michael Keane and Ben Mee ensured Daryl Murphy didn’t get a sniff of goal despite his hard work.
Mick McCarthy would certainly have enjoyed it had he still been playing.
Berra was in the wars again
The big centre back went into this game sporting a bandage following the head injury he suffered against QPR and has also lost teeth on at least two occasions this season.
So you have to kind of feel sorry for him given he found himself flat on his back in the first minute at Turf Moor following a heavy clash with Vokes.
Of course he got up and carried on after a fair amount of treatment, and it’s just as well he did as his defensive effort was certainly needed to help contain Burnley.
The biggest cheer was reserved for the referee
Mr Bankes wasn’t a very popular man at Turf Moor, following his reluctance to award free-kicks to the home side following a string of 50/50 challenges. Some were fair, some weren’t. It led to an enormous cheer in the second half when they were happy with one of his calls, which was by far the biggest of the game as a received a standing ovation.
New blood, but where does he play?
On the journey up to the North West it was revealed the Blues had signed Barnsley youngster Paul Digby on loan for the remainder of the season, with a view to a permanent deal.
He’s not one that many people would have known much about but is set to be around the first team squad from day one and is also likely to be converted into a full-time defender having previously been known as a midfielder.
Mick McCarthy didn’t have much to say on the subject after Saturday’s game, but could he have plucked another gem?
