Suffolk golfer Josh Robertson is celebrating a notable victory in America.

The 19-year-old, who is studying at Darton State College, in Georgia, won the CACC-WPCC Fall Intercollegiate Tournament, at Willow Point Country Club, in Alexander City, by three shots.

Robertson, who plays out of Ufford Park, is three months into a two-year golfing scholarship that includes education in sports business management, with a further two years to complete a degree in that subject.

His victory was impressive and even reported in the local Albany Herald.

Robertson was delighted.

“What a week. The final tournament of the Fall calendar and a beautiful golf course,” Robertson said.

“The first round was like being back in England, wet and windy. But I played well and had a level par.

“The second day was kinder and I started really well, being three under par after just six holes. I only dropped one shot, ended three under par, the only person in the tournament to do so.”

While financially it may not have been a big deal for Robertson, the kudos it brought was worth far more.

“I didn’t win much, just a little trophy,” he said.

“But the creditability of a win when coaches recruit is massive and it brought my stroke average down too.

“It still hasn’t sunk in I was in disbelief but it only drives me to work even harder ready for the spring as I know how good the feeling is to win I want to replicate it again.”

Robertson admits the standard of golf he is playing Stateside is similar to county level in England and above.

“There are very good players with scoring averages below 70 so that is something to aim for as it shows I can test myself against the best of them,” he added.

The teenager is coming back for Christmas to spend time with his family.
