A level crossing in the Suffolk countryside held up dozens of cyclists in the Aviva Women’s Tour this afternoon, organisers confirmed.
The peloton was held up while a train went through a level crossing, thought to be in Melton.
It is widely reported on Twitter that the peloton was delayed at the level crossing by around one minute.
However, a spokesman for The Aviva Women’s Tour said the incident “did not affect the outcome of the race”.
The spokesman said: “Stopping a race for a level crossing is standard safety protocol. The peloton was held up but this is standard for races around the world.
“There was a break around 30 seconds ahead of the peloton which passed the level crossing safely.
“The incident did not affect the outcome of the race.”
