The unbeaten Ipswich Basketball Club U13’s were the busiest team of the weekend, with a double-header for Coach Noel Lambert’s boys, which began with their toughest game of the season, winning 61-48 against the Southend Scorpions.
The team then travelled to perennial contenders NASSA and produced their most confident performance of the season, winning 95-40 to move to 18 wins and no losses on the season. Veron led the way with 32 points, while Huggins (22), Mobee (16) and Price (12) contributed to a balanced attack.
Ben Winter led the way for the U14 boys with 28 points and a huge show of mental toughness – grabbing a steal to seal the game after missing a pair of free-throws seconds earlier ensuring that his team did the double over MK Trojans, despite losing Lewis Tebbit to injury early in the game, while Pacey McLaughlin recovered from an ankle injury to add 11 points.
Thomas Payne added 13 points for the Blues in a 60-59 win, in which a quick 12-0 start proved decisive for the Suffolk side in moving Coach Wordsworth’s side to 9-4.
The Senior Women were unable to keep their win streak going, as a depleted team without Amy Linton and Emma Camp (both suffering from concussion) went down 82-50 to league-leading Oaklands despite 16 points from Ellie Shaxton and 14 from Harriet Welham in their first league loss under Coach MacDonald.
The U16 Girls continued their fine run of form, with Coach Kathryn James’ side getting a 74-57 win against Pioneers South, despite missing Ash Pink through injury. Freya Cooney (20), Jazz Tebbit (17) and Maya Price (12) led the scoring.
The U18 Men moved to top spot in their division thanks to a pair of forfeit wins, while the U14 Girls struggled on their trip to Southend Swifts, losing 92-58 despite 31 points from Beth Alexander, moving Coach Linton’s side to 9-6.
As our regular home-court at Copleston is presently being refurbished, Ipswich Academy hosted our games this weekend, and we’ll be back there again for next week’s home games, which includes the U16 Girls hosting Southend Swifts in a game with major play-off implications, and the unbeaten U13 Boys in their final regular season home game.
