Ipswich Wanderers made history on Saturday as they romped their way to their highest ever league win by demolishing Thurlow Nunn Division One basement side Downham Town by 12 goals to one.

Averaging a goal every seven and a half minutes, Wanderers, whose league victory was a record-breaking ninth in a row, were far too good for their beleaguered opponents who must have wished they had stayed at home.

Wanderers chairman Terry Fenwick spoke of his pride and admiration at the result.

“It was a very good day for the club,” said Fenwick.

“It’s an unbelievable result and one that makes me very proud as chairman.

“Full credit must go to manager Glenn (Read), assistant manager Steve (Jay) and all the players – they were absolutely terrific.”

Wanderers’ outstanding result didn’t go unnoticed as Sky Sports’ presenter Jeff Stelling highlighted the accomplishment live on Soccer Saturday, while Talk Sport reporter Tony Incenzo also tweeted ‘Result of the day – Ipswich Wanderers 12 Downham Town 1’.

“It was a little surreal to hear that we were on Sky but it’s fantastic for us,” said Fenwick.

“To be fair to Downham they kept on going and if it wasn’t for their goalkeeper it could’ve been an awful lot more.

“He made some terrific saves and even though he conceded 12, all of our goals were very good and of high quality.”

Wanderers got off to a flying start in the encounter with top goalscorer Remi Garrett netting after just six minutes with a penalty.

Another three goals from Garrett, doubles from Craig Jennings, Zehnn Young and Paris Tuwizana, as well as further goals for Ross Beech and Seth Duzgun saw Wanderers equal the club’s previous biggest win in all competitions, which dates back to September 2006 when they thrashed Long Melford 11-0 in an FA Vase encounter.

The result gives seventh-placed Wanderers a huge confidence boost as they prepare to take league leaders and main rivals Whitton United in a massive game on Saturday at King George V Playing Fields.

“Saturday will be the biggest test,” said Fenwick.

“It promises to be the game of the season.

“Like us, Whitton are in excellent form and top the table as things stand so it’s such a huge game.

Wanderers currently sit 13 points behind leaders Paul Bugg’s team but should they succeed this weekend and win their three games in hand, could lead the charge for promotion.

“We’re in a great position and we’re playing very well,” confirmed Fenwick.

“We’re creeping up the league with the form we’re in and the aim is very much to keep on doing that.

“There’s a long way to go but in my eyes, it would be a fantastic achievement to chase the front-runners come the end of the season.

“We obviously have a very big opportunity in the Suffolk Senior Cup too and want to retain that after winning it last season.

“I watched the DVD triumph on Saturday and it brought back great memories – ones that make me very proud as a chairman, and I want that feeling again.”
