The last day of competition at the Suffolk Junior Closed tennis tournament on Saturday saw a host of finals played with several close matches to decide this year’s champions.

The 16U boys’ singles final was one of the first matches off court at Ipswich Sports Club after Toby Cutting was beaten in straight sets by Ben Jones.

Cutting was involved in one of the best matches of the earlier rounds on Tuesday when pulled out all the stops to beat unseeded William Rudolph.

But it was his opponent and Jones who had the better of the match after an even start.

The first set saw both boys fighting for the win with some aggressive play but there were soon mistakes being made either side of the net.

And with Cutting becoming increasingly frustrated, number one seed Jones kept his cool to take the first set 6-3.

After that it was plain sailing for Jones as Cutting became even more agitated and was warned for his on-court language.

Jones took advantage of this and breezed to a 6-0 victory in the second set.

But Cutting did taste success later in the day when he overcame Ryan Lambert in the 18U age group.

Having lost the first set 2-6, Cutting rallied in the second to win 6-4 and then got the edge over Lambert in the tie break to win 10-8.

Another player experiencing both victory and defeat was Georgia Harris who won the 14U girls’ singles final against Harriet Petley 6-1 7-5 in the morning but lost to Olivia Hine 6-4, 3-6 1-0(7) in the afternoon’s 16U final.

Both of the day’s doubles finals were won in straight sets, Jonathan Simmonds and Gabriel Watson winning the 14U boy’s event with Jared Bones and Ben Jones victorious over Henry Hillyard and Ryan Lambert in the 21U age group.

The only player not to drop a game in a final was Kylie Bilchev, her 6-0 6-0 win coming against Juliette Lee in the 12U girl’ singles.
