LEISTON St Margaret’s face an anxious wait to see if they will be awarded three points in their fight against avoiding relegation from the Senior Division of the Touchline SIL.

They were winning 3-1 at Wickham Market on Tuesday night when the match was abandoned after 85 minutes due to the poor light.

The match, which was due to start at 6.15pm, kicked off a few minutes late and, after the usual 15 minutes half-time break, was not completed.

Keith Norton, chairman of the SIL, confirmed that the outcome will be decided at a league committee meeting next Thursday.

The Saints currently sit second from bottom, a point above tomorrow’s opponents Ipswich Athletic, and four points behind East Bergholt United.

They have only won once – a 3-2 victory over Haughley United at the start of last month – in a 13-match spell stretching back to a 4-1 win against Ipswich Athletic in late September.

Jason Drew, who was assistant manager to Chris Wright but took over the hot-seat in early February, is keeping his fingers crossed that the result will stand.

Drew said: “It would be a massive result for us, bearing in mind the position we are in, after a monumental effort from the lads on the night.”

The 42-year-old, who is being assisted by Neil Cole until the end of the season when the situation will be reviewed, is sympathetic towards tomorrow’s opponents.

“It is a massive game for both teams. I feel for Ipswich Athletic. They lost a large group of players in the summer and have found themselves in a difficult position. They are a club who should not be where they are, and we will approach the game in the manner like we do with every match and make sure we are on our game.”

The Saints, in common with most sides, face a hectic end-of-season schedule due to the backlog fixture backlog caused by the weather.

Drew said: “I have never experienced a season like this with the weather we have had in all the years I have been involved in local football.

“I don’t think it would have done any harm if the league had extended the season by a couple of weeks.

“We face a spell of five games in just 11 days next month, and our reserve side, who have reached the Gipping Press Cup final, are in a similar position.

“But we have prepared ourselves for the run-in. It will be a mad month but we will just take it each game at a time.

“We have been missing key players this season due to work commitments, but we now have everyone back and have a strong squad with bags of experience who will hopefully unite together for the run-in.

“We have had a lot of single-goal defeats. When you are down at the bottom Lady Luck doesn’t shine on you, but you make your own luck in football and we will try our hardest to turn it around.”
