Debate has reopened in the racing world after a thrilling photo-finish to this year’s Grand National was marred by the deaths of two horses.
Officials say they will look at how safety can be improved at Aintree as animal welfare campaigners reacted angrily to Gold Cup champion Synchronised and According to Pete being put down after falls.
National champion Neptune Collonges victory was overshadowed when news broke that Synchronised, which had thrown jockey Tony McCoy before the start of the race, was fatally injured by a fall at the notorious Becher’s Brook fence.
The RSPCA has since declared the deaths of both horses as “totally unacceptable” and demanded an urgent investigation.
