Nothing could stop 15-year-old West Suffolk Wheeler Alan Trolove taking the major spoils at his club’s grasstrack meet at The Priory School in Bury St Edmunds, even though the short, tight track favoured the Ipswich Bicycle Club’s ex-cycle speedway stars.

Trolove won the star event, the round of the national 800 metres series from Tim Snook of Ipswich BC, and also took the eight kilometre race – which needed 40 laps to make up the distance.

Trolove was in an early break of three before ploughing on alone and eventually lapping the whole field.

He was also part of the Wheelers’ youth squad, with Jonny Sjolin and Will Mapus-Smith, who beat IBC seniors Snook, Dan Zagni and Adam Keer in the team sprint, as well as beating the Wheelers’ own senior team, who were not so good at keeping together.

However, where sprint speed was most needed in the Devil and the Win and Out races, Ipswich’s Snook notched up the wins.

In the Madison track relay, pairings cut across club lines – though teams had to wear the same colours. Winners were Trolove and Keer from Snook and Zagni.

Ed Goater (CC Ashwell) won the Under-16 omnium, Robert Mercer (Colchester Rovers) the Under-12s and Colin Mantle (Mildenhall CC) the U-14 Freewheel.

Elsewhere, the seventh round of the Mud, Sweat and Gears MTB series started with only the sweat and gears in evidence, but towards the end of the senior races the heavens opened and the mud arrived with a vengeance.

Team CCN’s Glenn Stanford survived to take second in the senior race behind Jason Boutell of Revel Outdoors.

Boutell was the only senior to live with a group of Elites who took the top places, led by Stephen James (AW Cycles).

Short, sharp climbs were the feature of the Codham Park course near Braintree. Laura Sampson (Stowmarket & District), veteran Lewis King and grand vet Dennis Dix (Chelmer Cycles) scored wins by notably wide margins.

The morning races for the less experienced had the best of the weather. Eight-year-old Colin Mantle (Mildenhall CC) followed up his grasstrack racing the previous day with a sprint win from Olly Ford (Chelmsford Youth), while Will Kearse of VC Revolution won the youth event, Donna Dale (Walden Tri) that for women and Stuart Carmichael (Flitchbikes) the men’s.

Diss CC’s 62-mile road race on a new circuit on country roads near Hopton proved a cracking race. Straight from the start Josh Hannan (Glendene), Owen Lake (Cambridge CC) and Jack Stevens of East London Velo attacked, and gained 90 seconds.

They were joined by Scott Cousins (Maldon & District) Liam Gentry (VC Baracchi) and Bryan Crump (Eagle RC) forming a formidable force that never looked like being caught. Crump took the win.
