“WE just didn’t turn up,” was Leiston manager Mark Morsley’s honest assessment of his side’s FA Vase quarter-final exit to Coalville Town, writes Nick Garnham.

“I have just texted my mum and said we were lucky to get nil!” was his brutal analysis of Leiston’s display.

“In the first 10 minutes we looked bright and got the ball wide in the areas we wanted to, particularly down the right flank, but they then pushed on and got closer to us and won every second ball.

“At the end of the day they were better than us. The frustrating thing is that it was a poor goal when our defenders failed to clear their lines.”

Morsley said “Who wouldn’t be disappointed?” in response to Stuart Boardley’s obvious annoyance at being substituted at half time along with Angelo Harrop. “I wanted to have a go at them and so changed the formation to four midfield runners,” he explained.

Leiston chairman Andy Crisp said: “We came with a good game plan, but not many of our players appeared to be up for the game. It is disappointing not to put in a big performance when we needed it most.

“I feel it is a big chance lost, but we wish Coalville all the best in the semi-final.”

Leiston right-back Blake Saker, sporting a cut above his right eye sustained in injury time, said: “Having played so well this season, and especially in midweek against FC Clacton in the league, our hopes were high.

“In the first half we had a slight advantage with the wind and the slope, but did not take advantage.

“Everyone thought we could do it, but it wasn’t to be. On reflection we got what we deserved.”

Elated Coalville manager Adam Stevens said: “I don’t think it could get any better than at this minute. It was a fabulous team performance from start to finish. The atmosphere generated here today was different class and the players responded to it.

“All over the pitch we had leaders today, but give credit where credit is due because we have beaten a good side who are riding high in their league. We have turned them over and deservedly so.

“The lads have stood up and been counted and it is great for the town.”
