COLCHESTER dug deep to beat a strong Peterborough side at home on Saturday.
Colchester started the game with an attacking formation, determined to score goals early on and not make things difficult for themselves. This resulted in a great deal of attacking possession, which in turn made them vulnerable on the break. As in previous weeks Colchester earned themselves numerous penalty corners which they were unable to convert.
Meanwhile at the other end keeper Jacqui Crombie was keeping the home side in the game with a string of good saves. The pressure finally paid off midway through the half when the ball broke loose to Emma Creswell-Maynard whose ball across the 'D' found Louise Bibby who in turn managed to deflect past the visitor's keeper. With a 1-0 lead Colchester marked tightly and saw out the rest of the first half with relative ease.
Colchester continued to dominate early on in the second half, with Peterborough still looking dangerous on the break. As the half went on the game became more open, but it was the home side who finally made the game safe when Karen Harris drove with the ball to the back line, passing back across the goal for Helen Wall to slot in from close range. Peterborough threatened in the last 10 minutes, but Colchester defended with determination and held on to a 2-0 win.
