Ipswich Town have been boosted by the news Greg Leigh is ahead of schedule in his comeback from injury.

The left-back, signed in the summer, has been absent since the end of September, after suffering a fracture to his leg in the closing stages of the 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

He was expected to be absent for period of ‘several months’ but boss Kieran McKenna has now revealed he may only be a couple of weeks away from a return to training.

“He’s progressing well and is hopefully no more than a couple of weeks away,” McKenna said.

“I think he’s very close to starting some work on the grass and can be in-and-around training before the end of this month.

“It was one of those injuries where we needed to see how the bone healed and the timescale wasn’t clear right away, so it will be good to have him back.”

Leigh’s return will be a real plus for McKenna and Ipswich, given how well the former Morecambe player had worked sharing left-back duties with the in-form Leif Davis.

“We’ve missed him,” McKenna said of Leigh.

“Leif has been terrific and he’s been getting the credit he deserves having done really well.

“But it’s a really demanding position for us with a high physical output, so missing Greg and also Kane (Vincent-Young) at times in the last couple of weeks has put a big load on Leif.

“We look forward to having Greg back and having options in that position to work through the minutes together.”
