Exeter City boss, Gary Caldwell says he feels Ipswich Town will get promoted, after the Blues sunk the Grecians 2-0 at St James Park on Saturday.

A goal in each half was enough for Kieran McKenna's side, but Caldwell was left a tad disappointed by his team's performance.

"We said before the game they are very good - I'm pretty sure they'll get promoted," he said.

"That was the best of what League One has to offer, but in terms of performance levels I think we were a bit off where we have been.

"The intensity of our press wasn't quite what it has been but I was delighted with the players' effort and application. They gave everything."

Caldwell, who took over as manager of Exeter last month, has seen plenty of encouraging performances from his side since his arrival, but knows teams like Ipswich will punish mistakes.

"We have to learn the small lessons that we've been taught today," he added.

"It's never good conceding goals but the second goal is from a set-piece and we've done a lot of work this week on defending set-pieces. It wasn't even a great delivery but we lose our man in the box.

"We were very much in the game at that point and thinking about changes to really go for it. Once it goes 2-0 it's a big ask from there."

And Caldwell said his side didn't start fast enough.

"We started slow, recovered after they scored, but we cannot be one or two per cent off against these teams, we have to be bang at it.

"The intensity of our press, and our touch and quality wasn't quite there, and if it's not there you won't win these big games.

"We struggled to break down their defensive block and didn't win the ball back in midfield enough. That's something we have to improve against the bigger teams."

Both Ipswich and Exeter are in FA Cup action next weekend.

The Devon side travel to fellow League One rivals, Oxford United, while Town entertain non-league Buxton Town.

Before next weekend, Ipswich entertain Portsmouth in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night.
