David Wright is returning to Ipswich Town to become assistant Under-21s manager, we understand.

The 42-year-old – who played 120 times for the Blues between 2007 and 2010 – recently left his role as first team coach at MK Dons after Liam Manning was sacked

He will operate alongside Blues U21s boss John McGreal, the pair having previously worked together at Colchester United.

While at Colchester during the back end of his playing career, Wright started coaching younger players in the Ipswich academy.

In 2015 he combined an academy coaching role at Colchester with the first team manager’s role at Essex non-league club Maldon & Tiptree.

Wright was appointed assistant manager to Kevin Keen at Colchester in December 2015 and, after Keen was sacked in April 2016, was named as caretaker manager for one game. McGreal was subsequently named permanent manager and Wright became the U18s boss.

Six months later, Wright was appointed U18s manager at Norwich City. In 2019, he was promoted to U23s boss at Carrow Road.

In August last year, Wright became part of a new-look management team at MK Dons that had lots of Ipswich links. Manager Manning (a former Town academy player and coach) appointed Wright and Chris Hogg (a former Town player and youth coach) to his coaching staff.

The trio led MK to an impressive third-place finish in League One last season but were recently sacked with the team sitting 23rd in the table.
