Charlton Athletic are closing in on a deal for former Ipswich Town striker Macauley Bonne, it is being reported.

Bonne has been a free agent since his Queens Park Rangers contract was terminated at the beginning of the January transfer window, with the League One Addicks moving to snap him up.

The striker, who spent last season on loan at Ipswich, scoring 12 goals, returned to Rangers in the summer but has struggled for gametime, having seen a deadline day move to Charlton fall through.

But the Addicks’ interest has remained, with Football Insider now reporting a move is close to completion and the striker to be undergoing a medical.

Bonne played for Charlton before signing for Rangers in October of 2020, scoring 12 goals in 40 appearances for the club before a £2million move to Loftus Road.

His loan with Town was one of two halves, with Bonne capturing the imagination of supporters due to his red hot form during the first half of the season, scoring 11 times, before adding only one more in his final 30 appearances.

The boyhood Ipswich fan will now be hoping to get his career going again under Dean Holden, who replaced Ben Garner at the end of 2022, with a game against Ipswich at Portman Road scheduled for April 15.

Ipswich and Charlton played out an extraordinary 4-4 draw at The Valley earlier in the season, with Town letting a two-goal lead slip in stoppage time.
