Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna wants to add 'different dimensions and attributes' to his squad this summer.

The Blues stormed to automatic promotion in League One - winning 13 of their final 15 games - to end the club's four-year stay in the third-tier.

McKenna took the team to a new level thanks to some shrewd January signings and knows he'll have to improve the group again this transfer window if positive momentum is going to be maintained.

Jack Taylor became the club's first summer signing yesterday, joining in a deal of around £1.5m from Peterborough United, with more new faces set to follow ahead of the big kick-off in August.

"It's important to keep that consistent base that we've got," he told Sky Sports.

"We've built with the group that were here when I first came in the door and made additions along the way of players who we thought had the potential to go to the next division.

"Our first priority is keeping that group together, but for sure we need to add quality and different dimensions and different attributes to the squad.

"We've got a strong and healthy squad, but we're working hard behind the scenes to add extra attributes and qualities to give us the best chance to be competitive.

"We're going in with positive momentum, but we also know we need to add to the group."

In an interview with talkSPORT, he added: "It’s about finding the balance. We’ve got a group of players that have done so well for the club, they’ve got good togetherness, a really good understanding of how we play and we’ve got really good momentum.

“But it’s a step up, it’s going be a really strong league and we need to strengthen the group.

“It’s about making steps in the right direction and part of that will be bringing in some new players."

With four senior players released and five returning from loans, Town currently have 30 first team players.
