Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna says he 'expects there to be movement both ways' in the final two weeks of the transfer window.

The Blues have had a solid, if not spectacular summer of player trading so far. Former loanee striker George Hirst was signed permanently from Leicester, with midfielder Jack Taylor, attacker Omari Hutchinson and keeper Cieran Slicker the only fresh faces added to a squad that stormed to League One promotion.

"We had 24 outfielders training this week," said McKenna, whose early Championship table-toppers go to QPR on Saturday.

"They're all training well, they all know their jobs really well and I would trust any of them to play this weekend. In that way we are maybe in a better position than clubs who have turned over a lot of players and are maybe still trying to add players just to get the depth of their group up. We're already in that position.

"That doesn't change the fact that to be really competitive in this league we feel like we want to, and will need to, add quality to the group. It has to be the right players at the right price that will fit into the group and improve what we have though. That pool isn't so big.

"But we're working hard, we're continuing to have conversations, we're continuing, I think, to conduct ourselves with honesty and integrity in those conversations, and I think that will stand us in good stead in the long-term.

"We hope over the next two weeks to be able to add to the group. At the same time we are in a position where we have a strong squad who are fighting really hard for the club and I trust them to go out on the pitch and give their best every week. That certainly goes a long way.

"Nothing is very close, but there is still two weeks left in the window. As much as you always want things to be done early it isn't always possible.

"I'd still expect there to be some movement both ways over the next couple of weeks, but we aren't always in control of when that is. For now the absolute priority is to work really hard with the very good and competitive group of players that we have here who are fighting for the shirt."

Kyle Edwards has been told he can pursue regular first football elsewhere, while young duo Cameron Humphreys and Elkan Baggott could both be allowed out on loan.

"Nothing's closer on any of them," said McKenna. "It's going to take a good offer and suitable offer for the player and for the club for any of those exits to happen - and there hasn't been anything like that so far."

Asked if a loan for Baggott would only be sanctioned once a centre-half had been signed, McKenna replied: "Not necessarily because we have our three most natural centre-halves from last season all fit. Luke (Woolfenden) and Cameron (Burgess) are playing very well and George (Edmundson) is now feeling much better physically and is training well. We also have Dominic (Ball) who can also play in that position as well.

"Of course Elkan has given us good cover and is a good option in that position as well. As I've said before, he's improving game-by-game.

"One area in any decision we make around a young player's future is the strength of the squad at the moment, but that's not the only criteria of whether Elkan stays with the squad or not this season. It's a number of different factors."
