Ipswich Town are hopeful of landing Manchester United full-back Brandon Williams.

FootballInsider247 journalist Pete O'Rourke has reported that the 22-year-old is 'poised to join' the Blues, though we understand the deal - likely to be a loan - is not yet done.

Leeds United, who come to Portman Road on Saturday, have also been credited with interest in a player who is now heading into the final year of his contract at Old Trafford (though the Premier League club do have the option to extend that by a year).

Williams - who can play right-back or left-back - has made 29 senior appearances for the Red Devils, previously working under current Town boss Kieran McKenna, and spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Norwich City.

United boss Erik ten Hag recently revealed that he was impressed with Williams in pre-season, but that the one cap England U21 international was 'looking for something different' after making just one League Cup appearance in 2022/23.

It's understood that if Town do land Williams that could pave the way for left-back Greg Leigh to join League One side Oxford United.

After joining on a free transfer from Morecambe, Leigh made eight starts and 12 substitute appearances during his debut season for Ipswich.

The 28-year-old Jamaican international made some important contributions throughout a promotion-winning campaign, but ultimately found his league chances limited by the superb form of Leif Davis and is now in the final year of his contract.

Town have signed four players so far this transfer window in the form of George Hirst (Leicester, £1.5m), Jack Taylor (Peterborough, £1.5m), Omari Hutchinson (Chelsea, loan) and Cieran Slicker (Man City, undisclosed).

Blues boss McKenna said last week: "To be really competitive in this league we feel like we want to, and will need to, add quality to the group. It has to be the right players at the right price that will fit into the group and improve what we have though. That pool isn't so big."
