Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna is hopeful that winger Wes Burns will be out for 'weeks, not months' with the shoulder injury suffered on international duty with Wales.

The 28-year-old fell awkwardly during the early stages of last Wednesday night's 4-0 home friendly win against Gibraltar and left the field with his arm in a makeshift sling.

“He’s seeing a specialist today, so we’ll find out a little bit more about what the plan is," said McKenna, speaking at this afternoon's pre-match press conference ahead of Friday night's Championship game at Rotherham.

“If it’s a surgical repair it’s months, but they’re pretty positive about the chances of being able to heal it through more conservative treatment. If that’s the case then it would more weeks than months.

“He’s obviously very disappointed, but that’s part of football. He’ll deal with it, we’ll deal with it."

Meanwhile, McKenna revealed that striker Freddie Ladapo is also ruled out of Friday's trip to the New York Stadium.

“Freddie’s also seeing a specialist today, he’s got an issue with his Achilles,” said the Blues boss. "Hopefully it's nothing too major, but he’s not available for the weekend and then we’ll have to see for next week’s games (away to Bristol City on Wednesday, then Plymouth at home on Saturday).”

Keeper Christian Walton and centre-half Axel Tuanzebe both played in a behind-closed-doors in-house match at Portman Road at the end of last week, with the latter playing 60 minutes.

Tuanzebe, who has been eased in following some previous back issues, is yet to make his Town debut.

"We'll hopefully see him in the next couple of weeks," said McKenna.

"He's medically doing well, no issues with the back, is building up his fitness and building his understanding of our system and style of play. He's making good progress. Of course we have other centre-halves in good form, so it's a great position to be in.

"Certainly in this next block of games we're hoping to see Axel on the pitch and starting some games."
