Rotherham United have appointed Leam Richardson as their new manager following the departure of Matt Taylor.

Taylor was initially chosen as the replacement for Paul Warne, who joined Derby County in September last year. He made the decision to jump ship from Exeter City, helping the Millers establish their position in the Championship with a 19th-placed finish.

Now sat bottom of the league, that position looks to be under threat this season, and Taylor was eventually sacked following a 5-0 thrashing away at Watford, which came just days after their impressive 2-2 draw at home to Ipswich Town.

Reports suggested that Nathan Jones was approached for the job, but despite attending two games, he decided against taking over. Rotherham quickly turned their attentions to Richardson, who has accepted the role ahead of tomorrow's home clash against West Brom.

The 44-year-old had a brief stint at Accrington Stanley before leaving in 2013 to become assistant manager at Chesterfield under former Town boss Paul Cook. The pair moved on to Portsmouth two years later, guiding them out of League Two as champions in 2017.

Their next move saw them join Wigan Athletic that summer, although Cook made the decision to depart when the club entered administration in 2020. John Sheridan was initially placed in interim charge, but once he joined Swindon Town, Richardson was given the chance to impress.

Instead of joining Cook at Ipswich, Richardson opted to take over as permanent manager at Wigan. He helped them avoid relegation to League Two and saved the life of striker Charlie Wyke by providing quick CPR following a cardiac arrest.

He was then named as League One Manager of the Season for the 2021/22 campaign, where he guided the Latics to the title. His reward was a new three-year contract at the start of the following campaign, but he was shockingly sacked just 16 days later.

Across his two-year spell at the DW Stadium, Richardson faced Ipswich three times under three different managers: Cook (0-0 draw), John McGreal (1-1 draw) and Kieran McKenna (2-2 draw).

The Blues are due to host Rotherham at Portman Road on January 27th, 2024.
