Ipswich Town Women's boss Joe Sheehan said he was "delighted" that his side scored six goals in their first victory of 2024 over London Bees this afternoon.

Ipswich Town Women ran out 6-1 winners at The Hive, with goals from Natasha Thomas, Maria Boswell, Lenna Gunning-Williams, Leah Mitchell and a brace from Ruby Doe.

Manager Sheehan said: "It was reasonably good.

"We made a few changes to the team that have played the last few games, and it was a game played in difficult conditions.

"We made it slightly difficult for ourselves conceding a goal early in the second half, but I am really pleased with the response to that and delighted to score six goals."

On the goal that was conceded, Sheehan added: "I was a little bit more disappointed to see us concede a goal against somebody with so few attempts on our goal.

"We limited their chances, but to concede one is disappointing but we quickly got control back of the game."

Town started with a youthful back line, with Evie Williams and Leah Mitchell being aged just 17 and 18 respectively.

Sheehan added: "They both have had some really good games.

"Evie missed against Charlton but played really well against Oxford and Lewes and Leah was brilliant last week against Charlton, so there was no hesitation for me.

"We brought Maria (Boswell) one later in the game, and that calmed us down and managed the game well."

Bonnie Horwood, who started the game as Town skipper, added: "We are pleased with the result.

"We know there are areas to improve on, but overall, we're pleased with our performance.

"They got a goal back but we didn't panic too much and then stepped up a gear and controlled the game."

This was Horwood's first start for the Blues since Billericay Town in December.

On her return, she added: "I was pleased to be in the team.

"Been out for a few weeks now, so it was nice to go out and play for the team again."

Town's next game isn't against league leaders Portsmouth at the AGL Arena.

Sheehan finished by saying: "We're pleased with aspects of our game and over the last three games.

"It was good to get a win, and it is an important three points that can hopefully be a catalyst for the next few games coming up."
