Massimo Luongo has signed a new contract with Ipswich Town, extending his stay at Portman Road until the summer of 2025.

The midfielder's deal was originally set to expire at the end of this season, although he revealed that he wasn't in a rush to begin talks. He's since agreed fresh terms at the club, ending any speculation that he could leave as a free agent.

His new contract will run until the end of next season, although Town have the option to extend it by a further 12 months.

Luongo, who had a brief loan spell in Suffolk in 2012, rejoined the Blues in January 2023 after being released by Middlesbrough, signing until the end of the season and playing a big part in securing promotion from League One.

His contract was extended by another 12 months over the summer, allowing him to return to the Championship with Ipswich. He's formed a strong partnership with captain Sam Morsy, playing in 26 of Town's 28 league games so far this season.

He's scored twice in that time. The first was a crucial winner against Blackburn Rovers at the end of September. The second, which came in a 3-1 victory against Millwall in November, was nominated for the Sky Bet Championship Goal of the Month award.

The 31-year-old was set to feature for Australia in the Asian Cup this month, but he retired from international duty to focus on the Blues' promotion push.

“I’m delighted to have signed a new contract with the club,” he said.

"Playing for Ipswich Town, under this manager, fits me perfectly and I’ve got some great relationships both on and off the pitch that I’m excited to keep going with.

“I love every bit about being here and this is where I want to stay because it’s a happy place to be with a culture which runs all the way through every area of the club.

“I’m pleased to have got this done so now it’s a case of getting my head down and getting on with the rest of the season, doing my best to help the team.”
