Ash Boatswain scored the winner for Ipswich Town under-21's to beat Colchester United 3-2 at Maldon & Tiptree in the Professional Development League Two South this evening.

John McGreal's side went into this game off the back of their 2-0 win over Middlesbrough in the group stages of the Premier League Cup on Tuesday.

Town took the lead in the fourth minute as Leon Ayinde scored his sixth goal of the season, and the U's then went down to ten-men as Jay Mingi was shown a red card for a late tackle.

The returning Osman Foyo doubled the Blues lead just after the half-hour mark for his sixth goal of the season. He recently finished his month-long loan at Torquay United.

Ronny Nelson then pulled a goal back for the hosts just before the hour-mark, and they had the ball in the back of the net shortly after, although it was ruled out for offside.

However, they did score an equaliser through Oscar Thorn in the 69th minute, but Town retook the lead when Boatswain scored five minutes later for his sixth goal of the season.

That goal ended up being the winner as the young Blues secured all three points to remain fifth in the table and continue their unbeaten start to 2024.

They switch their focus back to cup action as they host Crystal Palace in the final group game of the Premier League Cup at Needham Market’s Bloomfields on Tuesday night.
