Extra-time was needed at the AGL Arena as Ipswich Town Women bowed out of the League Cup at the quarter-final stage, with a 2-1 defeat to Portsmouth.

The first ten minutes was an even affair, with Town playing some good football, but the majority of the action being in Portsmouth's final third.

Portsmouth broke the deadlock in the 29th minute, as Town keeper Poppy Soper gave the ball to Barrett in the area, whose effort was tapped home by Quirk into an empty Town net.

But the Tractor Girls were awarded a penalty in the 37th minute following a handball in the area after a fierce Maisy Barker cross.

Bonnie Horwood stepped up to take it and slotted the ball down to the right of the keeper into the back of the net to make the tie all square.

Soper kept the score at 1-1 in the minutes that followed, as she made two fantastic saves to deny Pompey the lead, with the score remaining even at half-time.

Town started the second half much the better side, and five minutes in, they had their first chance as Lucy O'Brien skipped through the defence but her shot from a tight angle was just kept out of the goal.

Town came so close to taking the lead as Leah Mitchell pounced on the ball high up the pitch before her cross caused a scramble in the box, and Natasha Thomas struck the crossbar.

Thomas hit the woodwork again in the 73rd minute as a deep cross from the right from Sophie Peskett found the Town forward, but her effort from point-blank range hit the upright.

Manager Joe Sheehan talked himself into a yellow card after Town should have been awarded a foul for a crunching tackle on Peskett, but the referee proceeded to give Town a throw in.

The game finished 1-1, meaning extra-time was needed to settle matters.

And just three minutes into extra time, Portsmouth took the lead with a long-range effort from Barrett which flew into the top left corner.

Town started the second half far better, just as they did during normal time, but were unable to get the equaliser.

So, the Tractor Girls exited the League Cup at the hands of Portsmouth, who they will meet again next week at the AGL Arena, this time in the league.
