Former Ipswich Town boss Roy Keane is being linked with a sensational return to management in the Championship.

Sky Sports pundit Keane, who led the Blues between April 2009 and January 2011, is the new favourite to take over at Sunderland, the club he led to the Premier League in 2007.

The Black Cats are without a boss, having sacked Michael Beale last month, just 12 games into his reign. He'd replaced Ipswich Town legend Tony Mowbray in the hot seat.

Sunderland, under interim boss Mike Dodds, have lost six games in a row and slipped down to 12th in the Championship table.

Now Gambling.com have made Keane, 52, the 5/4 favourite for an unlikely return to the Stadium of Light.

They say: "If Sunderland are looking for a manager who knows the club well and what it means to the community, then Roy Keane ticks the right boxes.

"The Irishman, who has drifted on the market to be the next Republic of Ireland manager, was close to a return in 2022, but talks broke down and Alex Neil was named as Lee Johnson's replacement instead.

"Keane, a popular pundit on Sky Sports and ITV, is the 5/4 favourite to replace Dodds as the club's next permanent manager."

Reims boss Will Still is second favourite at 7/4, with Keane's former Manchester United team-mate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer third at 5/2.

Steve Cooper and Scott Parker round out the top five.

Keane hasn't managed a club since leaving Town, but has been the assistant at Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and the Republic of Ireland.
