Ipswich Witches legend John “Tiger” Louis has been laid to rest this morning.

The former British motorcycle speedway champion passed away last month at the age of 82.

His funeral took place this morning at Seven Hills Crematorium in Ipswich.

East Anglian Daily Times:

Ipswich Witches said: “Everyone’s thoughts are with the Louis family at this time. John ‘Tiger’ Louis is a man this town will never forget.”

Mr Louis was born in Ipswich and began his speedway career in 1969, after time in other branches of motorcycle racing.

He joined the Witches in 1970, leading the team to the league title in 1975.

In the same year, he became British champion.

Nicknamed “Tiger” for the iconic leathers he wore, Mr Louis represented England in the World Team Cup, winning gold three times.

After his own racing career, he was a promoter at Foxhall for more than 30 years and oversaw a glorious period of Ipswich Speedway, before his son Chris took over.

John retired in 2019.

The Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund said: “Everyone involved with the Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund sends sincere condolences to the family and friends of the great John Louis who has recently passed away, at the age of 82.

“John was one of the most significant figures in British Speedway over more than half a century, as a World Class rider and a successful promoter.”

British Speedway said they were “saddened” to learn about Louis’ death.
