Ipswich Town: Goalkeeper David Best dies aged 82

Best played for the Blues between 1968 and 1974, keeping 62 clean-sheets in 196 games during his spell at Portman Road.

He started his career with local side Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic before moving on to Oldham Athletic in September 1966.

Two years later, he was signed by then-manager Bill McGarry for £25,000, shortly before the latter's departure for Wolves.

Best went on to be a key part of Sir Bobby Robson’s first European campaign with the Blues, keeping a clean sheet in both legs of the famous 1-0 aggregate UEFA Cup victory over Spanish giants Real Madrid in 1973/74.

The shot stopper was also in goal for both legs of the 1972/73 Texaco Cup victory over Norwich City, the first trophy Robson won as a manager.

Best departed Town for Portsmouth for £30,000 in February 1974, spending one year at Fratton Park, before returning to the Cherries, who were now known as AFC Bournemouth.

In 1976, he was appointed player-manager of Dorchester Town, before spell in charge of Wareham Rangers and worked as a transport manager for Westwind Air Bearings in his home town.

There will be a minute's applause in Best's memory ahead of the Championship home clash against Stoke City tomorrow evening.
