Ipswich Town: Kieran McKenna says striker signing may not happen

The Blues are understood to have gone into the January window with a shortlist of targets including Sam Surridge (Nashville SC) and Joe Piroe (Leeds).

However, speaking ahead of tomorrow's home clash with Preston, McKenna said it's not a given he will add further to his promotion-chasing squad following the recent additions of versatile attacker Anis Mehmeti (Bristol City, £3.5m) and midfielder Dan Neil (Sunderland, loan).

"Look, I think things are still possible," he replied, when asked about the final three days of the window.

"I'm not expecting my phone to ring in the next 10 minutes, but there's still three days left on the window and the situation hasn't really changed. My focus is mostly on the group here.

"We're happy with the two that we've brought in. The club are determined to improve the team or the squad in any way possible and they're working hard to do so. But, as I've said many times, we have good players here and we have a deep squad and if we can't find a player in any position that really adds something extra or different to us, then we'll crack on with the group that we have here that have been improving and we'll do our very best to the end of the year to be successful."

Asked if that meant there was a world where there were no further signings before the window shut, the Blues boss replied: "Yeah, I think it's definitely a possibility."

And when quizzed whether he would be comfortable with that being the case, he answered: "It's hard to put an adjective on it. We've added two to the squad. I think we went into the window knowing that there's been a big turnover.

"We've added lots of players and the group's actually showing signs of improvement, but we also need to look at with the position that we've fought to put ourselves in, look at every position on the pitch and think, 'Can we bring in someone who can improve us as a starter? Can we bring in someone who can give us a different option on the bench?'

"The club has done that and worked really hard. So far, that's led to Anis coming in, who gives us something different in those creative positions, and Dan coming in, who gives us competition and cover that we didn't have quite so much in the first half of the season.

"If we don't manage to do that in any other positions by the end of the window then we'll push on with a group that we have that.

"Since this group's come together at the start of September, I think we have probably gained more points than anyone in the league and we have improved along the way.

"I won't waste a minute's energy regretting or thinking about anything else. We'll just focus on what's coming up."
