Wherever you look, top flight and Championship football seems to dominate most weekends on the sporting front.

But there is always a wide range of different sports teams right here in Suffolk, Essex and Norfolk which play week in, week out and provide some thrilling fare for the regular and casual spectator alike.

Take a look at what’s going on in the region this weekend to see if there’s anything which takes your fancy.

Football: Leiston v Harlow Town

There’s no rest for a Leiston side who are, by all accounts, having a pretty successful season.

They played in a thrilling 3-5 loss to Bromley in an FA Trophy reply on Tuesday after drawing the first match 1-1 last weekend.

This Saturday they take on Harlow Town at Victory Road as the Blues return to league action.

There’s only six places between the two sides but Leiston, the hosts and higher-placed team in fifth, have three games in hand over their opponents and five over table-topping Needham Market, such has their cup involvement been.

There’s only been one win in the last five league games for Leiston though so with fewer commitments ahead of them now, they will be hoping to start edging back towards the league’s summit.

Venue: Victory Road, Leiston, IP16 4DQ. Tickets: Adult £10, concession £7, under 16 free. Date: 3pm, December 17.

Rugby Union: Diss v Ipswich

A Norfolk-Suffolk derby to get your teeth into here in the London 2 North East division.

The home side must be looking at this fixture expecting a win – they’re top of the league after 10 games while Ipswich are 10th in the 12-team division.

After some disappointing results in November Ipswich did pull off a comprehensive 31-3 win over bottom-of-the-league Campion last weekend.

So despite the formidable task facing them on Saturday it could be a good chance to start putting a run of victories together.

Venue: Victory Road, Leiston, IP16 4DQ. Tickets: Adult £10, concession £7, under 16 free. Date: 3pm, December 17.

Banger Racing: Mildenhall Stadium

It is the last meeting of the season on the race circuit at Mildenhall Stadium which is sure to end the season with a bang.

The micro bangers and ministox are all lined up to take part in round two of the stadium’s winter series.

Small hatchbacks, rather than the usual larger Volvos and Fords, will take to the track.

There is also the ORCi ministox on the bill, one of the star formulas this year, featuring junior drivers.

There are currently 93 cars slated to take part in the National Bangers’ Micro Madness, the main event of the night – plenty of vehicles ready to provide some smashing action.

Venue: Mildenhall Stadium, Haylands Drove, West Row, Mildenhall, IP28 8QU. Tickets: Adult £15, concession £10, five to 14-year-old £6, family (two adults, three children) £36. Date: 2pm, December 18.

We are always on the lookout for new teams and sports to feature in these articles.
