Suffolk scored a 9-3 victory over Cambridgeshire at Hintlesham for their first Anglian League victory since 2015.

A whitewash in the foursomes gave Suffolk the confidence they needed to win the singles by five matches to three.

Calvin Sherwood of Rookery Park was in terrific form. He teamed up with former Cornwall player Chris Fleming to beat Toby Crisp and Ollie Rush 6 and 5.

Sherwood went on to beat Crisp, back in the county team after a two-year break, 5 and 4.

James Biggs and Josh Cottrell, one up at the turn, beat Owen Davies and Callum Brookes 4 and 2.

Gregor Tait, back from the United States, had an excellent day winning his foursomes with Adam Sheldrake before putting Suffolk six up on the day with his singles win over Luke Ryan.

When Biggs went dormie three against Davies Suffolk were past the winning line. Then it became a matter of increasing the margin of victory.

Suffolk’s middle order faltered despite Cottrell sinking a 60-foot downhill putt on the seventh where Sherwood had previously chipped in from 40 yards for eagle.

The tactics of having two experienced Hintlesham players, Sam Debenham and county captain Jack Cardy, at the foot of the order worked well. Both won all their matches.

Suffolk were without Monty Scowsill who has glandular fever. They also missed Paul Waring who was back from the Brabazon and turned up to support his county colleagues.

Paul Waring of Felixstowe Ferry was unlucky. He ended on level par. One under was required over two rounds to make the cut. On the first day the klaxon sounded before he had finished his opening hole. He went on to compete his birdie the following morning.

Habebul Islam, the 17-year-old from Ipswich Golf Club, started with a disappointing 79. His second round of 72 lifted him above the other two Suffolk players.

Sam Byford (Ipswich) had 76 and 77 while Jed Seeley (Newton Green) had 77 and 82. Seeley was one of the few to finish his first round on the opening day.

It was good experience for the Suffolk quartet to be rubbing shoulders with some of the best amateur golfers in the world.

Callum Pipe of Braintree missed the cut (71 and 75) after an encouraging start. Todd Clements of Braintree, the English Amateur champion, pulled out before the start with a sore back.

Players known to Suffolk from the Anglian League also missed the cut. They included Lincolnshire’s Simon Richardson, Sam Done and Hugo Kedzlie who played against Suffolk at Spalding last month.

Englishman Nick Poppleton (Wath) won when he chipped in on the second hole of a play-off against South African amateur champion Wilco Nienaber.
