The former Gunners defender has made it clear that he wants to play in Europe again to enhance his England World Cup chances.

The Gunners, along with Manchester City, made it clear to West Ham back in January that they were interested in the player.

Should West Ham fail to make it into next season's Europa League then they could be forced to sell their star centre-back. Upson, 29, joined Arsenal in 1997 from Luton for 2million.

He failed to establish himself and was sold to Birmingham for 1m in 2003 and joined the Hammers four years later for 6m.

Meanwhile, West Ham have completed the permanent signing of Toulouse defender Herita Ilunga until 2013.

The 27-year-old Democratic Republic of Congo player joined the Hammers on a season-long loan last summer but he will now make the move permanent for an undisclosed fee.
