IPSWICH-based British number one Elena Baltacha is through to the second round of the WTA Tour event in Pattaya City, Thailand after beating local wildcard Nicha Lertpitaksinchai 6-2 6-3.

Baltacha only arrived in Thailand the night before her match after flying in from Israel, where she had been part of the AEGON GB Federation Cup team. She plays sixth seed Shuai Peng today.

Baltacha, who is ranked 57 on the WTA tour rankings, said: “I was delighted to have come through, especially after only arriving in Pattaya the night before from Israel.

“The heat and humidity warming up this afternoon before my match was tough, but once I got my match gear on and started preparing mentally for my match I felt ready to go.”
