AFC Sudbury assistant manager Andy Reynolds knows his side’s fate in Ryman Premier is still in their own hands despite their 4-0 hammering at Staines on Saturday.

Reynolds, and manager Jamie Godbold, take their side to Jimmy Bullard’s Leatherhead on Wednesday night, both teams looking for vital league points.

Sudbury are five points clear of the relegation trap – boosted by taking four points off Worthing and Kingstonian recently – while Leatherhead are reeling from being deducted three points after fielding an ineligible player. Bullard’s side are second bottom, having not won a league game this year.

“It’s a strange league and difficult to put a sequence of results together,” Reynolds said.

“Leatherhead started well when Jimmy Bullard arrived, which is to be expected. He attracted good players. But losing those three points has put them in trouble. It’s a league like that. Billericay thrash Needham Market and then lose to bottom place Grays.

“So we need to focus on ourselves. You can’t pin-point certain games and think you will get points here, or get points there. But things are in our own hands, which is the main thing.

“We still have the likes of Harrow Borough, Hendon and Canvey to play, who are in and around us.”

After the trip to Leatherhead, Sudbury travel to Met Police on Saturday, a team just above them in the table.

Injuries have also hit the Sudbury squad hard, but Reynolds is making light of it.

“Of course we miss the likes of Craig Parker, but we won’t use that as an excuse and we have plenty of good, young players.

“The game against Leatherhead is a big game for both teams, but big games is what we want our players to get used to.

“Last season it was different. Our big games were chasing a league title, this season it is battling more at the other end of the table.

“We have a young squad and we accept that sometimes that lack of experience is going to cost us.”

Sudbury are still awaiting to hear the outcome of their appeal against being charged (along with Hendon) for failing to control their players in a game that was abandoned last month after a melee, with Sudbury leading 2-1, with just a minute to go.

Both Hendon and Sudbury would relish the three points to boost their league placings.

They still have to play each other again at the Wardale Williams Stadium next month.

Four of Sudbury’s next five league games are away from home – at Leatherhead, Met Police, Wingate & Finchley and Havant & Waterlooville.
