BRANTHAM’S first taste of life in the Greene King Suffolk Premier League was a bitter one as they suffered after making the long cross-county trip to Lakenheath.

League newcomers Brantham conceded their opening match at Battisford, and only managed to conjure up nine men to go west to Lakenheath.

They then chased a lot of leather in the field as Ollie Wade (109) and Chris Palmer (85) put together a big opening partnership. Jon Tuffs (36) and Gareth Fletcher (33) also chipped in with useful runs as the home team posted a mighty 302 for five from 45 overs

In reply opener Colin Orman scored 19 and B Chinery batted well for an unbeaten 49, just missing out on his half-century although his team batted out the overs to reach 135 for seven.

Earl Stonham suffered their first defeat at Walsham. Ned Campbell (54) and Oli Jackson (51) led Walsham to a total of 243 for eight, and the visitors only managed 178 in reply. Rob Wrinch top-scored with 60, while Ben Davies picked up five for 37.

Michael Hugman’s 53 helped Stradbroke Vikings to 173 against Worlingworth, who reached their target for the loss of eight wickets thanks mainly to Sam Chilvers, who scored 65 not out and shared the winning partnership with Derek Cook (17 not out).

In Division One of the Hunts County Bats Suffolk League Adam Mansfield’s century helped Sudbury to a convincing 132-run win over Lakenheath.

Jack Backler followed up with four for 19 as Lakenheath were bowled out for 132, exactly half of the Sudbury total.

Worlington, meanwhile, lost their unbeaten record at the hands of near-neighbours Mildenhall. Frannie Bester scored 111, while Ben Shepperson (57) and Chris Baugh (48 not out) helped to give Mildenhall a total of 262 for four and despite 67 from Richard Ford Worlington ended on 241 all out.

Shepperson followed up with four for 47.

Adam Dellar’s 121 was in vain as Haverhill’s 251 for seven was overhauled by Woolpit, with Ollie Whiteman (116) and Parker (95) leading the way to a remarkable successful run chase.

Bury beat former champions Ampton & Culford by 70 runs in another high-scoring affair after posting 251 for eight.
