DEAN Bowditch was on the wrong end of a heartbreaking penalty shoot-out defeat as England crashed out of the under-17s European Championship against hosts Portugal last night.

The Ipswich Town striker scored the opener for England after just seven minutes but Portugal equalised almost immediately. Bowditch set up James Milner to give England a 2-1 lead, which they held until the second minute of time added on at the end.

But the Portuguese found a last-gasp equaliser and held their nerve to win the penalty shoot-out
