AFC Sudbury manager Jamie Godbold is in buoyant mood ahead of his side’s derby-day clash at Ryman Premier leaders Needham Market and wants to knock Mark Morsley’s men ‘off their perch’.

Sudbury are in good form ahead of their trip to Bloomfields, winning four of their last six league and cup matches, and Godbold is confident his side can cause an upset this afternoon.

“I can’t wait for the game, let’s knock them off their perch,” enthused Godbold (pictured).

“These games were always enjoyable to play in and Mark (Morsley) has got them firing on all cylinders – they deserve to be where they are.

“But we are in a good place and have done well over the Christmas period – we are playing well and picking up results.

“I am hoping that we have turned the corner as such with our recent results.”

Sudbury are four points clear of the relegation zone, ahead of the game – following promotion from Ryman North last season – and are 10 points shy of the last play-off place, which is currently occupied by Leiston.

With more improvement expected, Godbold explained the reason behind his side’s upturn in form.

“It’s just practice,” he said.

“We are playing similar teams and coming up against players with similar profiles.

“We are getting better and better with games and we are being as competitive as we can be.”

The two sides have already met this season, Needham prevailing 1-0 in the Suffolk Premier Cup semi-final and Godbold gave his verdict on the Marketmen.

“I am surprised (that Needham are top of the league) only because of the fact that they finished where they did (20th) last season,” Godbold added.

“We played them in the Suffolk Premier Cup and while both teams adjusted their sides, there was not much in the game and we were unlucky not to get something from it.

“We certainly don’t fear them, going there.”

Meanwhile, Godbold revealed why he had allowed young duo, midfielder Jack Newman and goalkeeper Callum Robinson to join Wroxham, on 84-day loans.

“We have sent them out to play some games with a view to them playing better with us, having played 20 or so games there,” said the Sudbury boss.
