Bury St Edmunds are gunning for their fourth successive win, at home to newly-promoted Wimbledon tomorrow afternoon (3pm).

Following the disappointment of their heavy opening day home defeat (17-50) to Tonbridge Juddians, another of the newly-promoted teams, Bury have gone from strength to strength over the last three weekends.

Ollie Smith’s new-look side have risen to seventh in the National League Two South table, following wins on the road at Broadstreet (20-16) and Barnstaple (39-24, last Saturday), and a home triumph over Old Redcliffians (28-20).

And the Wolfpack will start as warm favourites at The Haberden tomorrow, against a Wimbledon side who have lost all four of their fixtures following promotion via the National League Three (London & SE) play-offs last season – they finished second to champions Tonbridge.

“Last weekend was our best performance of the season, and we will be hoping to make it four wins this weekend,” explained head coach Smith.

“We stayed two nights down in Devon, the night before and the night after the Barnstaple game. It was a good team bonding exercise, and it was a very professional performance.

“It was massively pleasing for me, and a big confidence booster for this new group of players, although we can’t be getting too carried away.

“We will have played four of the newly promoted sides in our first five matches, so the fixtures have been quite kind to us. We know that we will have much bigger tests to come, but we can’t look too far into the future.

“We have to concentrate on Wimbledon first, and they are not to be under-estimated. They lost to Taunton (27-42) last weekend, but got a losing bonus point against a side who are second and looking very strong this season.

“We can only beat what is put in front of us, and the only team we have lost to so far, Tonbridge Juddians, look to be a decent side on the basis of their results.

“It was great to score seven tries at Barnstaple, and we had two or three other good chances to score as well, while Liam (McBride) left his kicking boots at home (missed seven of his nine kicks).

“But that was just an off-day for Liam. It was a very windy day, and he has generally kicked well for us this season,” added Smith.
