Bury Town lost their unbeaten record in the Ryman League Premier Division due to a bizarre goal after 18 minutes.
Neither keeper was troubled in a scrappy opening period, before Bury attacked in the 15th minute and Josh Vickers made two fine saves from John Sands and Joe Whight.
Canvey then took the lead three minutes later when Marcus Garnham totally missed his kick from a back pass and the ball fell at the feet of Spencer Bellotti who accepted the gift and put the ball into the net.
Further chances were missed at both ends before Bury were reduced to ten men on 82 minutes when Adam Bailey-Dennis was sent off for a professional foul.
