Division 2N

Cambridge City IV 1 Ipswich East Suffolk 1

IPSWICH East Suffolk travelled to the educational hub that is Cambridge hoping to educate their hosts in how to play hockey.

What occurred was not quite as planned as IES took a point and gained a solid start to the season.

In searing heat at the Peter Boizoit Astroturf, IES struggled to break down a well drilled City side and the early chances fell to the host team.

A harshly awarded penalty corner led to IES falling behind, the ball struck well between Brown and Lane into the goal.

IES rallied and good work from midfielders Harris, Jones and Aveling led to chances for Cole, Whittaker, Tingey and Taylor before a piece of genius levelled the game.

Tingey found himself in the D with limited options and chose to try a reverse stick shot, which hit the net with the keeper stranded.

The second half saw IES win several penalty corners and they were also denied a penalty flick when it appeared that a shot was blocked by a defender's body on the line, but play carried on.

City had few efforts on goal, with Brown, Short, Pettit and Vernon sweeping away wave after wave. All in all a solid point but a game IES would have expected to win.

IES now face Sudbury II at Copleston on Saturday, 2.30pm start.

Squad: Lane, Brown, Short, Pettit, Vernon, Harris, Aveling, Jones, Tingey, Taylor, Cole, Whittaker.
