COLCHESTER United's new manager Paul Lambert praised his players for a “terrific” performance to mark his first game in charge with a 2-1 victory at Stockport County.

Clive Platt struck with an 87th minute winner at Edgeley Park, after David Perkins' 20th minute opener had been cancelled out by a 42nd minute header from Matty McNeil.

Lambert said: “It was just a matter of getting that self-belief back. It's always been there, so I haven't had to do that much.

“There's no point in having all the ability in the world if you're not prepared to get hurt. We started well and could have been two-up inside the first 10 minutes.

“There were some terrific performances all over the pitch. It was a colossal performance, and now we have to build on that for Tuesday (against Millwall).

“We only have a moment to celebrate this win. Now I really want us to get that first win at home. We showed a great work ethic today. We've got some top players at this club, and they've had to take a few knocks lately.

“It was very important to get this win, especially at a tough place like Stockport. The players did it for themselves,” added Lambert.
