Colchester United stalwart, Drey Wright, is relishing the visit of league leaders Luton Town on Good Friday.

Fresh from Saturday’s 1-0 win at Stevenage, the Essex club’s first victory in six games, a bumper crowd is expected for the visit of the table-topping Hatters (kick-off 3pm).

Wright has featured in 37 of the U’s 39 league games this term, only missing out on the two fixtures against Newport County, and he has been in good form in recent weeks.

The 22-year-old, who made his professional debut back in 2012, is set to chalk up his 129 league appearance on Friday, and his 142nd career appearance.

He believes that the U’s have the capacity to surprise Luton and so make further progress up the League Two table .

“We’ve got a big home game on Friday coming up,” enthused Wright.

“We’re in a good place coming into this game. It was good to get a point on the road after a long journey last Tuesday (0-0 draw at Morecambe), and then to get three points at Stevenage.

“Maybe it has helped to be away from home, for a change of scenery, after some recent poor results at home.

“But we are looking to pick up points both home and away. That has got to be the aim now, as it should be the aim all the time.

“We’ve got a lot of confidence at the moment, and we’ve got some big clubs coming up to play at home. People tend to say that we do better against teams towards the top of the table, and Friday should be a good footballing game.

“Hopefully we can pick up the three points, like we did last season,” added Wright, with reference to the 2-1 home win over Luton from a year ago.

On Saturday’s game, Wright said: “It was a good performance from us. I think we controlled the game. We set the tempo in the first half, against a club with a new manager (Dino Maamrie) coming in. We rode that wave and then passed the ball around.

“We were solid defensively after getting the goal (Mikael Mandron’s 27th minute winner), like we have been recently. We haven’t conceded that many goals.

“I got a little knock early on, and it didn’t help with my complete mis-kick in the second half. I went off just as a bit of a precaution. It’s just a bit sore.”
