Colchester United boss, John McGreal, was frustrated that his side could not break down Morecambe in today’s 0-0 home draw, but he remains upbeat with his team going into 2019 in fourth slot.
he U’s frustrating festive period continued, with a goalless stalemate at home to lowly Morecambe, coming just three days after the 2-1 home defeat to Stevenage.
This made it five points dropped from a possible six in two home fixtures from which manager McGreal would have hoped for a far bigger haul.
Shrimps keeper Mark Halstead was rarely troubled throughout the afternoon, so the U’s will have to up their game when they travel to Crawley Town on New Year’s Day.
The closest they came to a goal was in the 87th minute, when Kane Vincent-Young’s stunning shot cannoned back off the inside of the far post. That was a great effort, and really deserved a goal.
“We are still in it,” insisted McGreal.
“There were a lot draws today, for the likes of Bury, Mansfield and MK Dons, so we are still fourth and level on points with Mansfield in third.
“It was a frustrating afternoon, because looking at the stats we have had close to 40 shots over the last two matches (including the 2-1 home defeat to Stevenage on Boxing Day).
“We dominated the game, territory-wise, but we just needed that bit of luck at the end.
“Kane (Vincent-Young) was outstanding for us all afternoon, and he deserved to score (hit the post with a shot in the 87th minute).
“The goals have dried up for us of late, but we are still hitting the numbers and getting in the shots and crosses.
“There’s a little bit of pressure on the players to win games to stay where they are in the league.
“But they are still working tirelessly,” added McGreal.
Luke Norris showed his frustration at being substituted by McGreal, with 17 minutes remaining, but the U’s striker spoke to the press after the game to apologise for his behaviour – he appeared to try and blank his manager.
“It was heat-of-the-moment. I shouldn’t have reacted like that. I was frustrated and I have apologised, said Norris.
